Join us for a 12-week series to realign your nervous system with basic, proven practices.

Move your body to music. Use guided visualization and meditation with intention. Self-reflect through journaling.

A simple, transformative 1-hour practice — held once a week.

You can practice live, or on your own time with the recording.

Intuitive, grounded movement

My movement instruction is made up of 10 years of training and instruction leading diverse communities of students. My classes are musically inspired, accessible and combine a range of influences from yoga asana to tapping, shaking and high-intensity interval training for cardio. I choose to emphasize energetic cues that invite students to observe sensation in the body rather than its shape or form. You do not need to have prior experience with yoga.

Journaling
Guided journaling

Throughout this series, we will practice a variety of simple and illuminating journaling techniques to give you a chance to see which type is most supportive for you. Each practice is designed to be able to do for less than 15 minutes/day.

Breathing and meditation techniques

We'll learn and practice breathing or meditation techniques that can be used to modulate the nervous system in different ways. This course will also offer a library of yoga nidra (non-sleep deep rest) recordings that you can implement on your own schedule or as needed, such as if you wake in the middle of the night.

THE SCHEDULE:
Note: All practices will be recorded so you can join at your own pace and schedule. Classes will be held on Zoom, and only the instructor will be filmed for the recording. You are welcome to join live with camera-on or off.

Testimonials from past students

"Thoughtful, supportive, holistic, and absolutely supportive. Incredibly good value!" - student, Look Before You Leap

"Kelly is a thoughtful and dedicated teacher. She provides context and content to support the day's movement, from journaling to meditation and breathing exercises. She shows up as herself and you feel her authenticity in the courses she develops. Kelly offers something wholehearted, something rich, a delicately packaged gift for each class, to unbundle and embrace. Thank you, Kelly!" - MN, Look Before You Leap student

"I’ve been meaning to write to you because the Tarot card reading you did with me was so inspiring! It really gave me a new perspective when I’d been feeling so stuck. And now I have a new job that feels like a really good step forward, and I’m feeling encouraged about forging ahead. Thank you for your wisdom and insights." - Emily, Practice Not Perfect student

"This was such a great practice for me. In the beginning I had a TON of resistance to being in certain poses, and sometimes just doing the practice at all. It helped me realize that I've been having that feeling in other areas of my life, and that recognizing it is 1) important and 2) often the first step towards doing something impactful. Even thought I mainly did the classes the day after, I was fairly consistent in doing them in the evenings and that gave me some solid structure to my day, which was much needed. Thanks so much for putting this together!" - student, Practice Not Perfect

Meet your teacher, Kelly.

Hi! My name is Kelly Barrett and I'm a writer, registered yoga teacher (E-RYT-200), and meditation and breath work instructor based in Tucson, AZ. Since 2013, I have led over 1,000 hours of yoga instruction throughout Washington, D.C., in Arizona and now online.

Through my virtual courses and retreats, I offer a variety of healing and exploratory modalities — including yoga-based shapes (asana), dancing, journaling, meditation, Tarot reading and nature walks. My mission is to help people tap into their innate curiosity to uncover their inner-most truth — so that they can courageously step into that truth through their decisions and actions.

How do I know if this is right for me?

If you’re wondering if this series is for you, I encourage you to read the statements below out and see if you feel any truth light up inside.
  • Seasonal transitions feel hard for me and often impact my mood more than I’d prefer.
  • I often dread the cooler temperatures or shortening of days that fall brings.
  • The busy-ness of my summer schedule crushed my spirit and self care. I could use a reset.
  • I feel pretty uninspired to move or a bit disconnected from my body.
  • Workouts lately leave me feeling wiped…rather than energized.
  • Exercise isn’t always fun for me…I wish that movement could feel good in my body.
  • I love a well-curated playlist … and when that one song hits just right after a long, hard day.
  • I like the idea of self-reflective journaling… if I could make time for it.
Practice Not Perfect is a method I’ve refined over the last several years of teaching, combining my training as a yoga and meditation instructor with my personal practice of journaling and my deep love for music and Tarot. This is the third time I’ve held this series, and I think it will be the most fun yet!

Disclaimers, Sources and My Teachers

My approach to teaching: The movement practices will be accessible to all. What I mean by that is that you don’t need to be a seasoned yoga practitioner, and we are not refining or workshopping specific postures to achieve any specific physical shape . Instead, we are using sensation in the body and rhythm of the music as a blueprint for the practices. I will be your teacher, but your body will be your guide. By the end of each practice, my hope is that you will feel more deeply connected to your inner nature, whether that means you took every movement cue I offered or you were lying down listening to your breath for half the practice.

Regarding sources: Wherever appropriate throughout the course, I will cite first-person teachers (you can learn more here) and/or academic or scientific research.

Regarding health: As with all of my classes, I advise that you speak with your doctors and/or mental health professional before embarking on any new movement, meditation or breath work. Please let me know if you have specific conditions before the course so that I may offer any modifications, contraindications or guidance. Please note: I am not a medical professional and cannot diagnose or offer medical feedback.

Regarding Tarot: I use Tarot as a tool for self-reflective practices to address blocks, questions or areas that feel foggy. Each of the cards is symbolic in some way of a lesson, an allegory, sometimes a person or idea, sometimes a mantra. I have been journaling on Tarot spreads for years; many of these reflections holding deep personal significance. When I work with the Tarot, it is merely an extension of this intuition-refining practice and I offer to students if they are so inclined and curious to learn more about how to apply in their own life.
